⚫What is Question Tags?

Ans: Question Tags are short phrases added to sentences, statements asking for agreement or confirmation.
অর্থাৎ, Question Tags হল বাক্যের মধ্যে সংক্ষিপ্ত বা ছোট বাক্যাংশ, যা একমত (agree) বা নিশ্চিতকরণের (confirmation) জন্য জিজ্ঞাসা করা হয়।

– যেমন ধরে নাও তোমাকে কেউ জিজ্ঞাসা করছে,
“এই জামাটি দেখতে ভালো না, তাই না ?”
– দেখো এই বাক্যে “তাই না ?” এই সংক্ষিপ্ত বাক্যাংশটি হচ্ছে question tags।

▪️Rules –

1. ইতিবাচক বাক্যে (affirmative sentence), বাক্যের auxiliary verb টি পুনরাবৃত্তি করে নাবাচক (negative) question tag টি গঠিত হয়।

যেমন- Ram is a good boy, isn’t he ?( not is he ?)

– দেখো “Ram is a good boy”- এই বাক্যটি একটি ইতিবাচক বাক্য (affirmative sentence)।
– এই বাক্যে ‘is’ হল auxiliary verb, এই auxiliary verb টি পুনরাবৃত্তি করে negative question tag টি গঠিত হয়েছে – isn’t he ?
অর্থাৎ বাক্য যদি ইতিবাচক (affirmative or positive sentence) হয় তাহলে question tag টি negative হবে।

2. নেতিবাচক বাক্যে (negative sentence), বাক্যের auxiliary verb টি পুনরাবৃত্তি করে হ্যাঁবাচক question tag টি গঠিত হয়।

যেমন- Ram is not a good boy, is he ? (Not isn’t he?)

– দেখো “Ram is not a good boy” – এই বাক্যটি একটি নেতিবাচক বাক্য (negative sentence)।
– এই বাক্যে ‘is’ হল auxiliary verb,এই auxiliary verb টি পুনরাবৃত্তি করে positive question tag টি গঠিত হয়েছে- is he?

অর্থাৎ, বাক্য যদি নেতিবাচক (negative sentence) হয়, তাহলে question tag টি positive হবে।

🔹Note:

(a) question tag এর subject অবশ্যই pronoun হতে হবে, কখনো noun হবে না।
যেমন-
1. Ruby is coming tomorrow, isn’t she? – correct.
– এই বাক্যটি নিয়ম অনুযায়ী সঠিক হয়েছে।

2. Ruby is coming tomorrow, isn’t Ruby? – incorrect.
– এই বাক্যটি নিয়ম অনুযায়ী সঠিক হয়নি, কারণ নিয়মে বলা হয়েছে যে question tag এর subject অবশ্যই pronoun হবে।

(b) বাক্যের যে auxiliary verb টি আছে, সেই একই auxiliary verb টি question tag এ ব্যবহৃত হবে।
– যদি বাক্যটির subject pronoun থাকে, তাহলে question tag এর subject একই pronoun হতে হবে।

যেমন-
1. You are coming to school, aren’t you? – correct.
-এই বাক্যটির নিয়ম অনুযায়ী সঠিক।

2. You are coming to school, isn’t it? – incorrect.
– এই বাক্যটি নিয়ম অনুযায়ী সঠিক হয়নি, কারণ question tag এর subject এবং auxiliary verb দুটোই ভুল।

(c) যখন বাক্যে কোনো auxiliary verb না থাকে, তাহলে question tag টি গঠন করার জন্য বাক্যের Tense অনুযায়ী “Do” verb ব্যবহার করে question tag টি গঠন করতে হয়।

যেমন- He speaks Bengali well, doesn’t he?

-দেখো এই বাক্যে কোনো auxiliary verb না থাকার কারণে question tag টি গঠন করার জন্য সাহায্যকারী verb হিসাবে “do” verb ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।

(d) আমরা জানি যে বাক্যের যে auxiliary verb এবং subject যদি pronoun হয়, তাহলে question tag এর subject এবং auxiliary verb একই হবে।

কিন্তু,
যদি বাক্যেটি “I am” দিয়ে শুরু হয়, তাহলে question tag এর subject একই থাকবে; কিন্তু auxiliary verb- ‘are’ হবে, ‘am’ হবে না।

যেমন- I am late, aren’t I?

কিন্তু, যদি বাক্যটি নেতিবাচক বাক্য (negative sentence) হয় বা বাক্যটি past tense form -এ থাকে, তখন question tag এর subject এবং auxiliary verb একই হবে।

যেমন-
I am not late, am I ?
I was fooled, wasn’t I?

3. যদি বাক্যের দুটি auxiliaries থাকে, তখন প্রথম auxiliary ব্যবহার করে question tag টি গঠন করতে হয়।

যেমন-
You should have done this, shouldn’t you?

The girl has been crying since morning, hasn’t she?


4. বাক্যের subject = everyone ও everybody থাকে, সাধারণভাবে question tag এর subject “they” হবে।

যেমন- Everybody can’t be clever, can they?

5. বাক্যের subject=everything থাকে, তাহলে question tag এর subject সবসময় “It” হবে।

যেমন- Everything looked beautiful, didn’t it?

6. আদেশ মূলক বা উপদেশ মূলক বা অনুরোধমূলক(imperative sentence) বাক্যের question tag সব সময় “will you?” হয়।

যেমন-
Kindly do me a favour, will you?

Please ask the boys to come in, will you?

🔹Note:
Positive imperative sentence এর ক্ষেত্রে, question tag positive বা negative দুটোই হতে পারে।

যেমন-
Close the door, will you?

Close the door, won’t you?

কিন্তু negative imperative sentences এর ক্ষেত্রে, question tag শুধু positive হবে।
যেমন- Please don’t make noise, with you?

7. যদি বাক্যর মধ্যে no, none, no one, nothing, hardly, barely, scarcely, seldom, nowhere থাকে, তাহলে সে বাক্যটি negative করোনা বহন করে; তখন সেই বাক্যের question tag positive হবে।

যেমন-
He hardly smokes, does he?

No book is allowed, is it?

He goes nowhere nowadays, does he?

He scarcely speaks with her, does he?

8. যখন বাক্যের subject হিসেবে anybody, anyone, no one, nobody, none, neither থাকে, তখন question tag এর subject “they” হয়।

যেমন-
Anybody can across the river, can’t they?

Nobody has ever said this, have they?

None came to his help, did they?

Anyone could have done it, couldn’t they?

No one would object, would they?

◾ কিন্তু যখন বাক্যের subject – ‘One’ থাকে, তখন সেই বাক্যের question tag এর subject সাধারণত we/you হয়।

যেমন-
One cannot live alone, can we/you? (not one)


9. যখন বাক্যে ‘Let’ এর অর্থ একটি ‘পরামর্শ’ (a suggestion) বোঝায়, তখন বাক্যের question tag – ‘shall’ দিয়ে শুরু হবে।

যেমন- Let’s go there, shall we?


কিন্তু যখন বাক্যে ‘Let’ এর অর্থ- অনুমতি (permission) প্রকাশ করে, তখনquestion tag টি ‘will’ দিয়ে শুরু হয়।

যেমন-
Let them play here, will you?

Let her come in, will you?

10. যখন একটি বাক্য There দিয়ে শুরু হবে, তখনquestion tag এর subject – ‘there’ হবে।

যেমন-
There is no doctor, is there?

There are four girls in the class, aren’t there?

11. যখন একটি বাক্যের subject= this/that থাকে, তখন question tag এর subject= it হয়।

– আর যখন these/those থাকে, তখন question tag এর subject= they হয়।

যেমন-
This is a big house, isn’t it?

These are toys, aren’t they?

(A) aren’t they?

(A) is he?
